To prepare for an AI interview, test your camera, microphone, connection and room a day early, then practise common interview questions out loud and on camera, using a structure such as STAR. AI interview practice helps most with timing, because one-way interviews often cap each answer at a few minutes and may give you only one take.
Setup checklist for an AI interview
Most AI interviews run in a browser or an app on your own device, so the setup is up to you. HireVue's candidate FAQ and tips page cover most of it, and the Hong Kong government's GovHK job hunting tips (last revision November 2024) add one item. Check it all on the device and in the room you will use.
| Item | What to check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | It works in the browser or app your invitation names. Put the window showing your video near the top centre of the screen. | HireVue's FAQ says looking at your feed there "will also make it look like you're looking at the camera". |
| Microphone | Record a short test and play it back. | HireVue's FAQ suggests testing it "by recording a voice memo". |
| Device and browser | Open the employer's link early, on the device you are most comfortable with. | Spark Hire says its interviews open "from the link provided by the employer without downloading an app". Other vendors differ, so follow your invitation. |
| Connection | Run a speed test and close apps that use bandwidth. | HireVue recommends "at least 350 Kbps" download and upload speed for its OnDemand interviews. |
| Power | Charge the device or plug it in. | HireVue's FAQ warns of "unexpected battery outages or shutdowns". |
| Lighting | Light in front of you, not behind. | HireVue's tips page says "lighting from behind makes it hard to see you". |
| Quiet room | A spot "free from distractions and noise", where nobody will walk in. | Quoted from HireVue's tips page. |
| Notifications off | Silence your phone and close chat apps. | GovHK's tips say to "turn off your mobile phone" when attending an interview. |
| Time | Block more time than the invitation states. | HireVue's FAQ says most of its video assessments take "under 20-30 minutes" and advises setting aside 45 minutes. |
| A practice run | Record one answer on the same setup and watch it back. | HireVue's tips page suggests "recording yourself on a smartphone, tablet, or computer" to get used to answering on camera. |
AI interview practice: how to practise your answers
HireVue's tips page says to prepare for its interviews "like you would for any job interview". Its FAQ names the common types: situational judgement questions, scenario-based simulations and past behaviour questions. The tips page also suggests "a list of brief stories about challenges you've faced, approaches you took, and results you achieved". GovHK gives the same advice for any interview: "prepare and practice your answers to questions commonly asked by interviewers."
Use the STAR method
STAR gives each of those stories a shape. The UK government's National Careers Service spells it out as Situation, Task, Action and Result, where the result is "what happened as a result of your action and what you learned from the experience". Two of its cautions suit a recorded interview well: "keep examples short and to the point", and answer "in a conversational way so as not to appear too rehearsed".
Singapore's MyCareersFuture site carries an article contributed by Michael Page (8 May 2022) that calls the action "the most detailed part of your answer". It suggests you "prepare five STAR interview sample answers" and deliver each one "in well under three minutes".
A routine to follow:
- Read the job description and list the skills it asks for.
- Write one STAR story for each skill, from work, study or volunteering, as bullet points rather than a script.
- Say each answer out loud with a timer running, and cut it until it fits.
- Record yourself on camera and watch it back, as HireVue's tips page suggests.
- Answer a few questions you have not seen before, so you can adapt a story on the spot.
Mock interview AI tools
A mock interview AI tool asks you interview questions, transcribes or listens to your answers and gives feedback. Google described one in a blog post on 2 June 2022: its Interview Warmup "lets you practice answering questions selected by industry experts, and uses machine learning to transcribe your answers". The post added: "Your responses aren't graded or judged and you can answer questions as many times as you want."
Some interview vendors build practice into the real interview. HireVue's tips page says "You'll even have the opportunity to do a practice question", and Spark Hire's guide says some platforms offer "the option to record practice videos". You can also ask a general AI chat assistant to play the interviewer. Its feedback is not the employer's assessment, and the real interview may score different things.
What to expect in an AI interview
The format depends on the employer and the vendor, and the invitation usually sets out the rules, so read it to the end.
| What varies | What the vendor says |
|---|---|
| Number of questions | HireVue's FAQ: "Most video-based assessments include between five and eight questions." |
| Answer length | Spark Hire: answers "usually have a ceiling, ranging from 1 to 3 minutes". HireVue's tips page: "just a few minutes". |
| Think time | Spark Hire: each question can set its own time to think before recording starts, and some offer "unlimited think time". |
| Attempts | Spark Hire: re-recording is "determined by the take limit set by the recruiter", and "Some platforms allow only one attempt". |
| Dropped connection | HireVue's FAQ: you can "pick up where you left off with the same link". |
| Accommodations | HireVue's FAQ: you "can also request accommodations from your recruiter or the hiring team". |
HireVue's FAQ also says that for "the vast majority of jobs" its interviews are a first step, followed by person-to-person interviews before hiring decisions "are made by people". For more on the formats, read what an AI interview is, the one-way video interview guide and the HireVue interview guide.
If your interview is on ROUND.1
ROUND.1 is a hiring marketplace for Hong Kong and Singapore. Its AI first-round interview runs in a web browser with a camera and a microphone; there is no audio-only or phone option. It lasts about 20 minutes by default, some roles are shorter, and 30 minutes is the maximum. You get one attempt and cannot restart it. If your connection drops, the same interview can resume, once by default (a role can allow more resumes or none), and a resume continues the same interview; it does not start again.
Each role is interviewed in one language, English or Mandarin Chinese. Accent, pronunciation, grammar and fluency are not scored. Answers are scored competency by competency, and each score is backed by quotes from the transcript. The same interview is reused for the other roles you choose, and a person at the company decides whom to hire. The full list of facts and limits is on the ROUND.1 explained page.
Notes for Hong Kong and Singapore
Both governments publish interview advice: GovHK's job hunting tips in Hong Kong, and the careers articles on MyCareersFuture in Singapore. Their basics match the vendor advice above. GovHK asks you to "present your answers in an elaborate yet concise manner".
Practise in the language of the interview. Each ROUND.1 role uses English or Mandarin Chinese; other employers set their own.
Read the consent and privacy notice before you record. On ROUND.1 you consent to the processing of your video and voice before the interview starts, under Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) and Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). With other vendors, check who keeps the recording and for how long. HireVue's FAQ says it stores data for "the retention period" chosen by the company you are interviewing with.
This is general information, not legal advice; check the official source for your case.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pass an AI interview?
Prepare as you would for any interview, then rehearse on camera. HireVue's candidate FAQ says there is no way to game its assessments beyond practising as you would for any other interview. Prepare short STAR stories for the skills in the job description, time them out loud, and test your camera, microphone and connection the day before. Check the invitation for time limits and attempts.
Can the AI tell if I read notes?
It depends on the vendor and on how the employer sets up the interview. HireVue's interview tips page says you can keep notes next to you as a reminder, while its cheating and fraud page lists tools employers can use, such as browser-focus tracking and image capture. Read the employer's instructions and any conduct policy first. A script read word for word can also sound rehearsed.
Is AI interview practice worth it?
It helps most with timing and with getting used to the camera. Spark Hire says answer limits in one-way interviews usually range from 1 to 3 minutes, and some setups allow only one take. HireVue's tips page suggests recording yourself before the interview. Practice cannot show how a particular employer scores answers, so use it to tighten your examples.
What is a mock interview AI?
A mock interview AI is a practice tool that asks you interview questions and gives feedback on your answers, often from a transcript. Google described its Interview Warmup tool in June 2022 as letting you answer questions chosen by industry experts while machine learning transcribed your answers, which were not graded. Some vendors, such as HireVue, also offer a practice question before the real interview.
How long should my answers be in an AI interview?
Finish inside the time limit the interview shows you. Spark Hire says answer caps usually range from 1 to 3 minutes, and HireVue's tips page says most on-demand interviews want answers in just a few minutes. Singapore's MyCareersFuture site advises STAR answers in well under three minutes. Practise with a timer so you reach the result of your story in time.
